Cware InstructionsStory

Italian maiolica is foodsafe serveware but may not be used for cooking. It may be washed in a dishwasher; we recommend using an energy-saver or low-heat dry cycle to avoid drastic changes in temperature. When storing mugs in a cupboard against an outside wall, we recommend you swish warm tap water in them before pouring boiling water directly into the cup; or put a spoon in the cup to absorb the heat. Crazing of the outer glaze sometimes occurs over time; this does not affect the foodsafe quality of the maiolica.

Care InstructionsStory

25 generations of the Grazia family stand behind each piece of magnificent Grazia ceramic.  Passed down from father to son in Deruta without interruption since the 12th century, the work of the Grazia family dates from 1500.  The kilns Grazia used from the company's founding in 1500 until the end of the 1800's can still be seen at the Grazia factory, where there is also a private collection of original Deruta maiolica pieces, some of which go back tothe 13th century.  Umbria's long-standing tradiiton of fine art is reflected in every Grazia product.  Each piece is made of clay dug from the Umbrian hillside, tempered and processed until it forms the sturdy base for the painter's skilled hand.  Twice fired and processed by hand to create an heirloom, each Grazia piece is its own treasure.

Ubaldo Grazia Dinner Plate Deruta VFG (Verdi Fondo Giallo) 28cm

Item SKU# IGZ-1-VFG104
Italy

Deruta Verde Fondo Giallo (Deruta green on yellow background) features a new twist on the traditional stylized wheat shaft design for which Deruta is so well-known:  striking in soft green against a rich golden yellow, with red flowers and a cobalt border.  This design was popular in Deruta in the 16th century and was used for everything fro dinnerware to decorative tiles.  In the 1990's, a friend brought Ubaldo Grazia  tile, found in a ruined country chapel, bearing the polychrome design "Dvfg."  Grazia put the pattern back into production and it became an immediate success.  It was carried by  Neiman Marcus for many years.  Here, in the full-size dinnerplate (28 cm).  Handmade in Italy.
